Charging the FP2 / cable problems

(Almost) sorry to say: I’m charging with my 5+ year old Samsung charger (fixed connection USB plug - wall plug, 5V / 0.7 A, but 4 contacts) without any issues.

Hi all !
My pieces of informations :
monitored the charging current with Ampere:

  • RAVPower 4 port 30W: 1 A port : 0,98A /2,1 A port : 1,1A
  • RAVPower power bank130000: 1 A port: 0,73 A /2 A port:Can’t charge it
  • OnePlusX charger (5V 2A): 1 A
  • Motorola charger (5,1V 0,85A): 0,64A
  • Clevo P150SM notebook: 1 A port: 0,87A/0,5 A port: 0,17A
  • Chromecast charger (5,1V 0,85A): 0,65A
  • RaspberryPi Charger from Vilros (5V 2A): 1,35A

So, basically all my chargers worked, only the RAVPower Power bank got me trouble, but
only for one port, thumbs up to the Raspberry charger that hold the
record.

I also had this problem, one night i plug it in, i take it the day after, i look at the battery level 10 minutes later : only 10% remaining, in the first place, i tought i badlly plugged it the night before, so i just putted it to charge again, and again, 15 minutes later : 40% remaining (but it was charging !!!)

Hi there!

After receiving my FP2 everything worked fine. After some new installations and updates the phone started to have problems with charging via USB connection to my computer. It would only charge when completely turned off. Turned on it would charge only for a couple of seconds and then disconnect. I did a complete reset and things turned back to normal. But now I’m facing the problem that the battery would only charge in all other USB-modes than the charging-mode. When I turn on the charging-mode, again it disconnects after a second. I tried two different cables, same problem.

Does anyone have the same issue?

Best,
Sil

Could it be that your computer enters a power saving mode? As far as I know it needs to be switched on in order to charge FP2. Maybe if you connect your FP2 with another USB option selected, the computer can’t go to sleep and keeps USB active or gives more energy to the phone…

Sorry if I used wrong terminology. Before starting I didn’t know the difference between data and charging only micro USB. My phone supplier just advised any cable or charger would work. I bought good quality data cable and found it worked with ALL my chargers. I just think Fairphone should make it clear data cable is required. This would save a lot of frustration.

Thanks for your reply! The computer is not in sleeping mode, so this is not the problem.

Another issue that I’ve noticed concerns the red charging light. It doesn’t turn on when charging, only after reboot it works for some time. But as soon as I dis- and reconnect the cable it won’t turn on again. To me this seems like a bug. Anyhow, these are kind of minor problems, because the battery charges. But still it’s irritating. I use only data cables.

That’ a known bug. As soon as you receive a message, the LED stopps working as a charging indicator.

My battery will only charge if plugged into a computer (laptop, PC, mac all work), but I cannot get my battery to charge if the lead is simply plugged into a wall socket (I bought an expensive new lead, but it made no difference). At least it is consistent, but extremely frustrating :frowning: and limits how i can charge it.

I’m wondering if anyone else has this issue?

I moved your post here as your profile says you have the FP2 (the other topic was about the FP1).

Sorry - thanks

My FP2 is charged at my PC in 3 hours.
It is also charged with all chargers that provide 5V and 500mA.
It will not be charged when I use a charger that delivers 2.1A.
It is also not charged from an external battery that delivers 2.1A.
These two are not even recognized by the FP2.
I used different cables. Always the same behavior.
Apparently, some of you, charge the FP2 even with “mineral water”,
all chargers, external batterys, cables, …
Can it be that the charging electronic is sensitive on higher Currents eg. for security reasons and component tolerances cause, that it works in many FP2 and not in some?

I have a powerbank with 2A output and it charges my FP2 well and really fast. I use the USB cable that came with the powerbank. It’s very short and thick. So I think the problem in your case may still be the cable…

Before the update (in beta version right now) I couldn’t charge with a 2A neither. But now it works perfectly ( less than 1h for complete charge). So just wait for the update, hopefully it will be ok.

Hi Everyone,

I have my Fairphone now for nearly 6 weeks and I have a charging problem. While it is plugged in, it is always switching between charging and not charging every second. I rebooted the fairphone already and it did not help. The cable is not broken because my kindle is charging normally. Because it is always switching from charging to not charging, the software is slow while charging.

Can anyone help me,
Evelyne

I moved your post here where we gather all charging problems.
And I’ll repeat what has been said her numerous times:
You have to try another cable. Sometimes you’ll have to test quite a lot until you find one that works. And just because a cable works with one device doesn’t mean it will with another. The FP2 needs a USB data cable.

I have the same problem, the front screen says that the phone is charging, but if you look under settings > battery the phon e is not chargeing. I can only charge if I close the phone completely down! Most anoying!

htc Adapter, Model TC E250. Output 5V, 1A max only works if the phone is shut down

I’ve got exactly the same problem, I too have to rely on using my laptop to charge my phone.

I’ve bought two chargers now, both specifically 5V 1A output as requested and have had no luck. Interestingly they both initially worked fine but after an initial charge the charging light on the plug turned off and won’t turn back on and now the phone doesn’t charge at all from them (I’ve yet to check if they will charge another phone as all my housemates have iphones). Could it be that my phone is somehow ruining the charger? They were both brand new albeit not the greatest of quality but I don’t know much about these kind of things. One was Currys Essentials model CUSBCH12 and the other was from Carphone Warehouse model TCBE40CABLE-1A. The Currys charger doesn’t have an inbuilt cable but the cable I used with it is the one that works perfectly with my laptop so I expected it to work fine with the charger…

@AnnaD did you have a similar experience or did yours not work from the start?

Has anyone else come across this?

Hi,
I too experienced charging problems. The phone worked for just three days before being rendered completely nonfunctional. The charger I was using has been purchased from Fairphone specifically for my new FP2. I was left with no means of mobile communication and no access to the information on my sim (contacts etc). Given the limited customer support that was available (up to eight working days to reply to an email enquiry seems poor) I opted to return the phone. Very disappointed to be honest but given the number of other posts on here describing similar experiences there is clearly a problem and I think I made the right decision.

Hello,
also to me it seems my FP2 is sort of picky, when it comes to charging.
I tried several combinations with sometimes astonishing results:

  1. USB-charger with my “charging cable” (a broken data cable, which I used to charge e.g. my headset or my (company) S4 mini.) Seemed to DIScharge my FP2. (That’s been my very first try and first made me believe I’ve got a broken battery :frowning:
  2. Same USB-charger, but different cable: Worked.
(I then dumped all cables NOT working to spare me the confusion.)
  3. Data cable working with the S4 mini + USB-port on my (company) laptop (running Win7): Charged with FP2 switched on; but having the FP2 switched off leads to a “rolling reset” of the FP2. It comes up with the charging animation; this goes through one cycle, then the FP2 restarts. This repeats seemingly endlessly (tried maybe 5 cycles). I think I tried to set the FP2 to charging mode/MTP/PTP before switching off - all with the same result.
  4. When I tried yesterday to charge on my USB hub, it didn’t work with two different cables, both able to charge the S4 mini. (FP2 showed no charging symbol.)
  5. Funnily when I tried just now, it worked. (The difference I’m aware of, is the fact that currently the FP2 is 89 % charged, but it was much less then I tried last time)The AC-plug of the hub is specified with 5 V / 3.5 A (sounds more than sufficient)
  6. One of these cables, but used with the AC adapter for the laptop (which has a USB-A plug of its own) worked - also with a charging state of < 40 % on the FP2.
  7. A very slim USB-charger with fixed cable (borrowed from my sister) worked.

So all in all the FP2 seems to be picky. It’s hard to tell what will or will not work.
This is currently my biggest day-to-day hassle with my FP2…

Regards

Martin
