Just got my new FP6 today and it didn’t come with a charger (which was unavailable in the store anyway…). I thought, fine, I have my old Samsung charger. It’s at 20W, not 30 but that should just mean it’s charging a little slower, right?
Turns out, the thing doesn’t seem to be charging at all. It shows on screen that it is, but the battery remains at 63% no matter how long I leave it. That is when the phone is turned off! Isn’t that strange?
Does anyone here have experience with this? Do I have to buy one of those expensive chargers and cables for this to work at all?
Seems like it is charging, but incredibly slowly… After about 90 minutes I moved from 63% to 69%, still while the phone is turned off. I guess I will have to spend money on a new charger and cable…
Honestly kind of disappointing they don’t include it, if one needs somewhat advanced/new products to charge it anyway. There should at least be the option…
Checkout and compare with your charging equipment.
What I can say, for my FP6, it also accepts some simple amsung and Sony chargers from my old devices with an out of just 5W to 10W. I don’t know what the real output power is. It’s charging slower, but it’s charging.
See here:
For me, this sounds like the charger can’t deal with the device to arrange higher charging power, and then falls back to USB standard 5V and 500mA which leads to only 2,5W charging power. So this could explain your extreme slow charging.
Do you have any other cable to test? Whatever charger I used (all old all used, Apple Samsung Anker) I never saw slow charging because of the charger. However I have seen cable causing slower charging or no charging at all.
I have the same problem with my Samsung charger (Output: 9V - 1,67A or 5V - 2A) and my FP6 with preinstalled /e/OS. It didnt charge one percent in 8 hours. My second (older) charger does work with Output: 5V - 1A. Also my Powerbank with Output: 5V - 3A or 9V - 2A or 12V - 1,5A or 5V - 2.1A.
Now I am worried if any of these charging methods can harm the battery…
What does it happen if you connect your phone to your car through Android Auto? Does it work?
Something that helped me (at the beginning then things got worse) was connecting and disconnecting the cable, waiting every time a couple of minute to see if the charge increased. If it increase don’t touch it for a while and keep your fingers crossed, it could charge.
Remove the “eco charging” feature if you’re using it so that you can take profit of any minute the charging works. Remove also the limit to 80% charge so that you can fully recharge the battery. Finally, use the “battery saver” function to save power.
Another thing you could try is charging it when it’s turned off, this was also useful a couple of times but at the end, as I wrote, things became unmanageable and I solved the problem only by replacing thee USB-C port module.
I have the same problem, with the fariphone I bought last weekend. It’s very wastefull to force everybody to buy a new charger. Also very inconvenient if you ever want to borrow someones charger…
Also people are now turning of eco charging and 80% charge limit (see post above), which is also designed to extend the life of the battery, so that’s also very wastefull.
@yvmuell Please understand that I pay quite a premium to buy a phone that is not wasteful. I also understand it’s hard to start a new smartphone brand that is sustainable. So I understand and accept your product isn’t perfect yet. So I will just hope that it’s a software issue and you can fix it in an update. I use a Huawei SuperCharge (HW-050450E00) with a 2m ugreen charging cable. If you want I can send it to you so you can test it yourself.
Normally I would have given this a bad review on Trustpilot, but I think the work Fairphone is doing is really great and extraordinary, so I won’t do that.
