BBC apps not working on WiFi

Has anyone else had an issue on FP5/Android 14 where BBC apps will load on 4G/5G but not through WiFi? I’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps I can find, including:

  • deleting the app cache
  • restarting the router
  • uninstalling and reinstalling the app
  • restarting the phone
  • ensuring both app and phone are on latest versions

I’m not sure what else could be causing this so would value anyone else’s thoughts!

Thank you

Do other mobile phones work, if they are connected to your WiFi? Do you receive an error message?

This is something I found with some possible glitches:

BBC Sounds works well on my WiFi-connected FP5.

I had a similar problem from time to time with my previous router and some apps (e.g. IMDb) and websites, though. Switching to mobile data, start the App and switch back again sometimes helped.

Welcome to the community.

The only times I’ve had problems with Sounds it was due to the use of a specific VPN. In other words, the BBC may exclude some IP addresses.

If you’re using a VPN, try without (or try using a different server), and vice versa.

Just to say that’s about iPlayer (VOD only available in the UK), whereas the OP is might be asking about BBC Sounds (i. e. radio and podcasts).

He was asking about ‘BBC apps’ in general.

Ah, so he was.

Likely IP related one way or the other.

Thanks for responses, all.

After several days wanting to throw my phone and/or router out of the window, this has finally fixed itself. I didn’t change anything so can’t tell you all why it broke and why it now works!

It was BBC News, BBC Sport and Sky Sports apps affected. Others like iPlayer and Sounds seemed fine to me.

I’d still love to know why this happened but mostly thankful for your attempts and glad it’s working.
