I’m hoping to find a way to use Evernote on my FP with Open Source OS (FDroid and all that). Is there a way to get google play apps to work with the de-googlified OS?

Have a look at Raccoon or OpenGapps.

… or you could use an online service like apkpure.com or others to simply download and install the required apk. Unlike other methods this works only for free apps. Don’t forget to allow installation from unknown sources to succeed.

I don’t know about apkpure, but those “appstores” can also contain modified versions of apps with malicious code.

Apkmirror.com is considered trustworthy because they are run by Android Police.
