By default there’s no icon for it in the status bar, but the notification is still there for me if I simply swipe down. I get an icon for the USB connection once I enable USB debugging, though.

Oh yes, you’re right. Having USB debugging on, I hadn’t noticed there was another minimised notification just under it, which is really not noticeable if one looks too quickly (which I think might have been the case here).
Will edit my post to add this! My suggested solution still works nevertheless.
