Oh no, that even lowers a chance I’ll get an answer to my 20 days old request
Practically speaking, is there any evidence that support talks to development or knows what development is doing? It seems to me more like support sends the bugs in bottles over sea and development sometimes manage to catch some of them a few months later… Sometimes a little damp and with smoothed out writing
From my experience, it is. At least they talk to us (not too much, but enough, and in critical bugs, we’re able to have several responses a week). But fixing still takes a lot of time.
As we can see the roadmap progressed a lot from initially end 2025 and the current roadmap was introduced quite recently and very detailed for all FPs.
Overall, this entire speculation is just leading to nowhere. From a vague not saying anything statement about Android 14 we are now rather discussing that they stop support soon.
Their lack of communication just shows they do not care at all about our concerns about this update that is severely delayed at this point. It’s a few minutes job for them to drop by and acknowledge our concerns and give some information, but even that is too much effort for them apparently. So this is my last fairphone for sure and will change to another brand when the time comes and will warn my friends away from this product.
No what we are actually are talking about is that Android 14 is now 1,5 years old. Since 6 months no update from Fairphone on any progress. In parallel they reduced the updates to bi-yearly. Without any proactive information. While a significant feature of the whole product is the support of updates and new versions. And this fits to the whole support of Fairphone which does not keep up to ther marketing promises.
Thats just another flame baiting incorrect statement.
We did monthly security updates for about 2,5 years, and then we did switch to bi-monthly security updates* since 2024. Furthermore, we will keep the bi-monthly pace until the end of the software support.
The Pixel 6a was released in 2022 and will get updates for 5 years which means until 2027. It is also completely water resistant and newer models even have longer support times and iFixIt provides many parts for replacement including the needed tools for that (display, battery, speakers, camera modules, vibration motor, SIM tray etc.) and has detailed instructions how to do the repairs.
Yes, the repairs are not that easy as with Fairphone and they may not be as fair as Fairphone when it comes to the source of their materials. But when “fair” and “maximum easy repairability” arer not the only major reasons to get a Fairphone, I believe the Pixel devices are not the worst alternative.
Also keep in mind that apps like the Google Camera and Photos apps don’t ask for additional subscriptions to be able to use all features. Only for additional cloud storage you need to pay - but you don’t have to use the cloud if you have your own storage using Nextcloud or similar services and use FolderSync to keep your data backed up there.
And last but not least and maybe also important for some people: QuadLock provides cases with integrated adapters which are flush with the back of the case for Pixel phones but not for Fairphone. Yes you can stick adapters to universal cases, but this is not the same.
The downside there is the fact, that HMD does not allow to unlock the bootloader. So if they stop providing updates, you can’t even install LineageOS. With Fairphone or Google Pixel this is not a big issue - both allow to unlock the bootloader and install LineageOS or other alternative systems. If you don’t need things like Google Wallet, this may be an option too.
According to this German article Golem.de: IT-News für Profis Qualcomm agreed with Google to extend Android support for up to 8 years provided the manufacturers use this option. Maybe this is also possible for Qualcomm devices from the past, too and we can get forward towards Android 14/15
But I wouldn’t get my hopes high for existing/old devices. The article speaks of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 plus the next 5 generations of the Snapdragons 7 and 8 for devices that came with Android 15 right from the start.
