Alternative to Google Photos

Hello everyone. I have a new FP6 and switched from a Huawei. On my old phone my photos and videos automatically saved to my phone gallery but in the FP it saves to Google photos which I don’t want. Is there a free and private alternative to this?

Anything nextcloud comes to my mind. Ether self hosted, in the (sovereign) cloud or managed. Also, some cloud services do this: jottacloud.com

Hello
Are you looking for a alternative to the cloud services or an app to see/edit them on the phone?

If the latter, you could check the fossify gallery.

Hi,

of you are into selhosting, you can give Immich a try.

I was about to suggest Immich aswell because it is very similar to Google photos on the phone as well as on the desktop.

If you don’t do that way, it is possible to use it with a dedicated hosting service. with immish on your phone, you can plug it to https://pixelunion.eu/ which is free up to 16Gb

Another nice solution is https://ente.io/ that comes with the hosting and the app.

Yes. Just for the phone. I’d rather them not all be in a cloud. I’ll check out fossify. Thanks!

I’m using Immich (self hosted) as well. Its awesome, works fast, easy and is feature rich! If you don’t want self hosted, you could also check Ente which is end-to-end encrypted and open-source. https://ente.io/

Cool! I didn’t knew about pixleunion

I’m using Filen, it’s German encrypted cloud, reasonably priced and has integrations in all systems on PC/Mac. On my phone it just works in the background and grabs pictures from user specified folders (you can backup any picture folder automatically, and it will separate them in the cloud unlike one drive and g drive which dump everything in one place).

For just viewing gallery I’m using Fossify Gallery - highly customisable,

I like Gallery from F-Droid Gallery | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

Thanks everyone! I got fossify but am unable to find a way to stop my camera from automatically saving everything in Google photos. I’ve turned off the backup feature but would still rather not have everything hosted there. Is there a way to disable it?

I think that’s a setting in Google Photos. I never used Google Photos, I have disabled it (so no photos are uploaded).

I use syncthing to sync to my computers.

Syncthing is very good at what it do, can keep revisions and deleted files too if you wish, lots of nice and logical settings.

And computers syncs to a hosted nextloud instance. Nextcoud is far from begin a nice sync utility but that is not the main purpose of it.

I’ve just tried Gallery, but it only looks for photo’s on the device itself an my photo’s go straight to my SD-card. So I’ve already uninstalled Gallery.

I use Google Gallery. like you mentioned, and my one experience, Google Photos is mainly designed to display and sync pictures from Google Drive. It can show images stored on the phone itself, but without the by Google intended Google Drive use it doesn’t really work.

Be aware if you remove or disable Google Photos, i found that some other apps rely on it to function properly.

Google Gallery is juist for offline use.

I gona try:

probably its better to avoid google apps.

To turn off the photo backup

  • Open Google Photos.
  • Tap the top right corner (profile picture).
  • The third option should be Backup.
  • There you can turn it off.

The app will now give an error each time you open it and will try to turn the setting back on again.

If you want to remove all pictures from Google Drive, you’ll have to do it manually. The easiest way is to use a computer.

To disable the app

  • Go to Settings on your phone.
  • Tap on Apps (usually the 4th option from the top).
  • Tap on All apps.
  • Tap on the search icon at the top of the screen and type Photos (depending on your language settings).
  • Tap on Photos.
  • Tap on Disable. (big button in the middle)

Small warning: I have turned it back on and dit hide it on my app drawer. I found that some apps I was using will give issues when Google Photos is disabled.

Thanks so much!!! Exactly what I needed

Which Apps would that be? I have all Google Apps disabley accept Maps, Play Services and Play store (however no account added) and no issues with any app.

As the stock foto app is designed to be used with Google Fotos one has to choose each time which app to use for viewing after taking a pic if Google Fotos is deactivated. The “always” switch doesn’t work. Annoying but it’s a price I’m willing to pay.
Open Camera doesn’t show that behaviour.

I think only when you have more than 1 App that could display, I dont have to choose each time.
