🇩🇪 🇬🇧 Aachener Fairphone-Stammtisch 12. MÄRZ Fairphone Community Aachen

OK, winding down took almost a day :relieved:

Fairphone Community Aachen’s 11th meetup …

… was quite a demanding 3 1/2 hour night – both for myself as well as for Fairphone Angels from Düsseldorf and Liège who pretty much saved my, err…, very own bottom module, albeit to everyone’s biggest dismay not another longstanding and most loyal first hour Fairphoner’s all new FP2’s core module which remained stubbornly un-revivable.

Turnout well exceeded expectations with 18 people (12+2 having FP2s, 3+1 having FP1s, 5 without a FP) in attendance plus three short-time visitors who nevertheless had FP issues to deal with. One was actually offering her fully functional FP1 for free … because “there are no more batteries to buy!” So you can guess – we didn’t accept that! (And directed her to the well-known Generic battery topic, of course.) The FP1 was in fact a recurring topic during and even already before the meetup – two locals who could not make it that night had actually been put in touch beforehand in order to let another fully working FP1 change hands from a now FP2 owner to a smartphone virgin. And a returning participant from the 10th meetup was spontaneously equipped with another surplus FP1, having seen her own iPhone 5 take a dive just the day before.

A brief introduction around the table revealed that the newspaper announcements paid off big time: Most of the unprecedented attendance resulted from these, but to a smaller part also from having looked us up online (and to teach myself a lesson, the events web page was explicitly mentioned, too). Almost every second attendee joined us for the first time, so a brief introduction to the Fairphone project and its two main drivers – conflict minerals/fair trade and sustainability/repairability – was a must. Most of the planned agenda (Android 7, alternative OSes, Crowdloaning) had to be pushed aside given the abundance not just of questons, but to not mince words: a heavy and partly worrying load of FP2 troubleshooting as well. This host was confronted with quite a challenge and would not have coped with it had it not been for “Angels in Action”: @amber and @oli.sax who provided tireless assistance and support as well as Aachen Fairphoner Christian who had volunteered early to let me demonstrate the dis/reassembly of his FP2 to the eyes of the newbies. I owe you folks a big measure of gratitude, not just for making the way to Aachen, but to also show up and help despite not everyone of you being perfectly well last night. You took quite a load off my shoulders.

And although we were able to solve quite a couple of issues (one FP2 owner just needed a little encouragement to re-establish contact between her camera module and the core module by her own hands, another was helped switching from Ubuntu to Lineage), we also had a major disappointment :frowning: when no one was able to fix a founding Aachen Fairphoner’s all-new FP2 respectively its core module. It will now travel back to Fairphone Support.

So all in all a mixed bag – great attendance with many new faces, yet on the other hand also a couple of issues that might not have given the best (but perhaps also not the most representative) impression to some newbies. Nevertheless, virtually everyone was happy to be included in our email list and seemed to look forward to future opportunities to meet up and get in touch. We are eyeing the second half of November for Meetup #12.

See you soon!

P.S.: Additional thanks to @lorahaspels @Monica.Ciovica @lina1 for not just providing a ton of fresh merchandise and tirelessly advertising the event on social media, but also for just bearing with me :relaxed:

Wow, congratulations to this bis success!

Who is this guy in the back with the white t-shirt? He shows up in different locations. He seems to be everywhere. Even at Fairphone’s HQ#creepy :joy: In serious: I’m amazed by this enthusiasm. We should make a forum badge for being at [3/5/10] different meetups.

This is amazing! Congratulations :raised_hands:

12th Meetup, 27 November 2018

:gb: Our 12th meeting was quite a bit smaller than our extensive September meetup, convening a total of just eight participants with only one new face (already owning an FP2 for quite some time though). While we started as six FP2 owners, one FP1 owner  and an owner of a heavily taped other smartphone (I don’t remember the brand), we closed the evening with the latter giving one of my downhanded FP1s a trial run for the coming week. So while the FP2 now clearly dominates our meetups, I also keep equipping new people with FP1s …

A few late (but fully understandable) cancellations had the host a bit concerned prior to the meetup, but the (near) all-Fairphoner composition and the cozy size of the group allowed us to get some more actual troubleshooting and technical help done. With a little patience (after some trial and error, we even managed to backup some photos beforehand ) , the Android 7 upgrade was successfully performed on an FP2 whose owner had had quite a big trouble with her first FP2 at the previous meetup. Of course, both the owner of the „just upgraded“ FP2 as well as those not having upgraded yet also got a thorough enlightenment :bulb: on how to properly shut down a 12 MP camera FP2 on Android 7.

So despite the rather familiar small group, we were all surprised how quickly time had elapsed when the clock hit 22.00 h

Looking forward to Fairphone Community Aachen’s next meetup in the new year!

13. Stammtisch am 5. Februar 2019

P.S.: Dank an @lorahaspels @Monica.

13th meetup, 5 February 2019

Attendance remains an almost unpredictable lottery in Aachen

Admittedly, I went to last night’s meetup with the worst fears, preparing myself for a meagre Fairphoner trio after just two confirmations, but quite a couple of cancellations in the run-up to (and on) tuesday. How wrong I was … When I arrived half an hour in advance of the scheduled beginning, the two I had expected were already there … and within an hour the meetup grew to a total of ten Fairphoners. While everyone was already equipped with a Fairphone (8 FP2, 2 FP1), the meetup did include three freshers who attended their first-ever Fairphone meetup. And fortunately, both Rhein-Ruhr and Liège Fairphone Angels @Amber and @oli.sax were able to make the way from the rivers Rhine & Meuse once again, too. Thank you.

Given the 100% quota of Fairphone owners, an introduction of the Fairphone project as a whole wasn’t a top priority this time; nevertheless, the progress in fair sourcing of conflict minerals was a topic. Instead, the recent drive to sign up Aachen Fairphoners to the forum was intensified through some hands-on explanations (for convenience’s sake, on a tablet computer) on the forum’s general workings and more specifically the forum messaging system. And while nothing is settled yet, there might actually be another attempt at bringing „Zeit für Utopien“ to an Aachen cinema. Eventually, one of the Fairphone freshers voiced his wish to initiate a Fairphone meetup in his own university town as well (he was in Aachen just temporarily for a family visit). A thought that had the Aachen host both enthusiastic and nostalgic :relieved: – said university town being his own place of birth

Discussions were quite Fairphone-centered this time, although eventually recent German hot-button issues (Tempolimit hooray :+1: ) were brought up as well, although with predictably great unison in this circle of people  Although for some the meetup had started well before the scheduled 7 pm beginning, the final goodbyes were once again only said a little after 10 pm.

So contrary to the host’s worries in the hours prior to the meetup, the event turned out very nice. However, there were also two regrettable ingredients … Aachen’s 13th meetup was the first ever all-male one  And last but not least one of our nicest and most knowledgable Fairphoners joined us for the last time: The Liège Fairphone Angel said Arrivederci to the Fairphone Community Aachen and the Euregio Meuse–Rhine, heading for his new job and life at the Mediterranean Sea starting in March.

P.S.: Thanks to @lorahaspels @Monica.Ciovica @Ingo @Stefan for patiently retweeting my overly frequent announcements!

Hi Urs,
More than happy to play a little part for spreading the word of the Aachen community :raised_hands:
Always looking forward to reading your recaps. Please let me know if you ever have particular questions/remarks that come up during the meetups that maybe I can share more info on.
Have a lovely day :balloon:

Templergraben 55, 52062 Aachen

Eintritt: 3 € | Abendkasse: 19 Uhr | Einlass: 19:30 Uhr

:gb: Brief recap of last night: The movie showing was surprisingly well attended – not sold out, but I’d estimate it was certainly 150 folks, perhaps more. Interest in Fairphone could not be missed even before the movie as proven by in an increasing number of talks at my small improvised Fairphone stall (plantable pencils prove pretty popular, @lorahaspels!). The longer “Zeit für Utopien” (Utopia Revisited) ran, the more Fairphone dominated the movie, and eventually @martin.grottker and myself had the stage all for us, resulting in Fairphone being the focus of all questions by the benevolent audience. With a little luck, we might even see two or three movie viewers at our upcoming 4 June meetup in the Pfannenzauber.

Unfortunately we had the (numerically) poorest attendance in two years. A severe weather warning that stretched from an hour prior to four hours past the meetup might not have helped.

We were just five tonight, and yet I think it was a very nice evening with some heavy duty repair jobs done. A first-time meetup attendant had already announced his FP1 repair needs in advance, and after some initial checking, I replaced his motherboard. The new motherboard has quite a journey behind it now: After its “first life”, it was implanted into an :austria: Austrian Fairphoner’s FP1U last year by the Rt. Hon. Colleague from Vienna, Herr @Stefan Brand, travelled to :belgium: Liège (right in Aachen’s neighbourhood) with its new user a little while later and reached :de: Aachen just two weeks ago when the display it was screwed onto was hopelessly splintered. To avoid risky repairs, I replaced the whole phone (then) and was glad I had kept the damaged one when I got the latest repair request this weekend – from our aforementioned, second-hand FP1U owner in nearby Raeren :belgium: So the motherboard is doing its duty in the third FP1U from tonight.

Apart from that, I demonstrated the mighty abilities of TWRP to the two other FP2 owners, explaining how you can store a total of six or seven current OSes on your SD card, allowing you to switch between them within just 10-15 minutes without any need to hook it to a computer (well, at least not after the very first installation). Oh, and we fastened the screws of an unreliable 12 MP camera module – for now. Let’s see if the tightening helps in the long run.

Anyway, while attendance was lacking, it was an all enjoyable and packed night with literally no breaks for the host. Oh, and I even got home before the long expected severe weather (in fact, I got to view some intimidating lightning from the top of the final hill before home, but really severe weather still has to materialize as I’m writing this  ).

P.S.: This was the first Fairphone Community Aachen meetup with its new very own Community FP2. Thanks to the magnanimous-beyond-all-means donation by @jmcornel, our community is from now on permanently equipped with a used and (with the sole exception of SIM connectivity) fully functional CFP2 that celebrated its premiere in last month’s Zeit für Utopien movie showing. Now feel free to give Jessica a load of likes, please!

:gb: Fairphone Community Aachen will join the first-ever Aachen Fairtrade Fair on saturday, 31 August in the Aula Carolina at Pontstraße 7 (near Market Place / Town Hall). A small (volunteer) Fairphone booth will stand by for questions from all those interested in Fairphone. Both the Fairphone 1 and the Fairphone 2 will also be there for a first-hand experience  | Facebook event

Lots of conversation with people interested in buying and with local press even before the official starting time … what followed was quite an exhausting afternoon. I’m out of FP3 promo cards, out of FP3 promo leaflets and nearly out of a voice. I think I easily poured 6 litres of tea and water into my throat today (so far).

The FP3 was met with general acclaim, people who took photos liked them and to my great astonishment, several of them lauded how the FP3 (187 grams) was so nicely lighter than both the FP2 (164 grams) and the FP1 (170 grams) …

Now apart from the above FP3 shot (cropped) of a Fairphone(r ) 1 and a Fairphone(r ) 2 I’m also adding a shot (unedited) in bad light below. While it doesn’t hide the simple fact that it’s dark, I think it still impresses me how much detail it still captures. Simply speaking, both photos were taken from almost the same photographer position, just – you guess it – once with the sun in the photographer’s back (1st shot), the other time in the face.

:gb: My translation of the Fairphone paragraph [in the article linked to right above]:

A big crowd can also be found at Urs Lesse’s booth. While he does not sell anything, he’s part of the Aachen Fairphone Community. Since 2013, the Dutch company offers a smartphone consisting of fairtraded materials. Especially tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold were often sourced from conflict zones. Besides, the[se] smartphones can – in contrast to others – be repaired by the user him/herself. Urs Lesse periodically offers events to give those interested the opportunity to get to know this sustainable smartphone.

UPDATE 11 October 2019: A short video summary from the 31 August Fair has now been produced (a blue Fairphone shirt briefly shows up at the 0:34 and 0:40 marks):

:de: 17. September 2019: 15. Aachener Fairphone-Stammtisch

:gb: 17 Sep 2019 Fairphone Community Aachen quarterly meetup

With Fairphone just having launched their new phone in Berlin and Amsterdam last month, our quarterly meetup is your opportunity to experience the new Fairphone 3 live.

If you already know you’ll join us on 17 September, feel free to press “Going” at the very top. Last but not least I will be grateful if you would share either this announcement or the Facebook Event with anyone who might be interested.

Everything’s ready …

… and host’s in place

Eventually (depending on count) a good mix of 7-10 people that included more than one FP1, a couple of FP2s and a few curious newbies without a Fairphone (yet) at all. There was quite some interest in Fairphone and the FP3 from another meetup at the next table as well, including that other meetup’s host who had already ordered the FP3 right after the 31 August Aachen event.

The generous options of switching back and forth between at least half a dozen operating systems on the FP2 actually made one of the latter participants more eager to find a used FP2 than to wait for an FP3 and its (hopefully) eventual opening for alternative OSes. Once again, the (prototype) FP3 was disassembled – for the 8th, 9th, 10th time by now? – and reassembled with success. While Fairphone/F-Droid’s Checkup app as well as the Camera app prove it still works flawless, some of the connections and connectors are showing signs of wear by now (again, this is a prototype FP3 and the experiences gained through it already made Fairphone improve and reinforce the final model selling now – an extra screw and reinforced threads etc.)

Some tests and (hopefully) repairs on a malfunctioning FP2 display (it was dropped) will go into extra-time tomorrow … and if all goes well, might result in another LineageOS user.
